Scott looked at me yesterday and said, “Is she really six?”

As I put Gianna to bed last night, I glanced up at the framed photos in her room. They’re some of my favorites. As she snuggled in tight, she laid her head on my chest and said, “Let’s pray, mama. I’m tired.”

And I wanted to broadcast the moment – not just because of its pure sweetness – but also for the many people who raised their eyebrows at us when we shared we were pregnant with baby number six back in 2013. I could see the judgment. We were four years out from an intense NICU stay that forever changed our lives. And, truthfully, I understood. They worried about us and “if it could happen again.” That’s when I say, read chapter ten in my book.

Gianna is a gift, straight from the arms of God. That was always the hardest part to convey to people, even those that knew our story intimately. She is a healer, that one. Enjoy this year’s birthday letter!

Gianna,

Oh, what a personality you have. It has taken root, especially during the great pandemic of 2020. You will scarcely remember the fear and the face masks, but I know you will absolutely remember time with your college brother, swinging all day every day in the backyard, chalk art and endless movie marathons. As with most things, you’ll remember the good stuff.

You love imitating dances from TikTok, Lord help us. But, I think you love Torchy’s queso more. Atta girl. When you say, “Mmmm, delicious,” after eating something tasty, it is pretty much the cutest thing, ever.

Lately, you and Luke have buddied up. It’s mostly endearing, but good Lord can the two of y’all destroy a room. Your American Girl doll clothes are in every square inch of the house, you change clothes three times a day (“because I’m hot”), you love to belt out “Never Enough” and you tell fantastical stories, all while holding your pretend phone and talking to Instagram.

Oops, that’s my fault.

Every night when we put you to bed, you ask for one more hug (which I always give) and then you sweetly say, “Have a good sleep with daddy!” punctuated with a giggle.

All of us try to get mad at you, but it rarely lasts long. Perks of being the baby of the family. You love school, especially your teacher and your new friends, and you are thriving in your new environment. Life is an eternal summer for you. What a gift you are to our family.

May SIX be your best year yet. I love you more than you may ever know. Hold my heart tenderly, sweet Gianna. You’re the baby that healed it.

Love,

Mom

Today I exclaimed to my husband of 37 years(in a week), “How is it possible that our baby is going to be 28 this June?!!”
I want 6 back. 6 was fun. I pray that her year is filled with less face masks and lots of social non-distancing. I love when she joins your IG videos. Her joy is refreshing. Thank you for sharing.

Our last baby is also one that was sent by God and is just what our family needed. He has a way of knowing that, doesn’t He? Happy belated birthday to Gianna!
