Oh my happy heart, college gameday in Aggieland!

As a southerner there are two things you learn growing up: 1) it’s yes ma’am, no ma’am, yes sir, no sir and 2) football is sacred. If either of those aren’t your gig, you may want to skip this post and come back tomorrow.

Scott and I woke up early, ate a nice breakfast with our friend Frank and then headed to campus for the awesomeness of Aggie gameday. We parked over at St. Mary’s Catholic Center and enjoyed the loveliest of walks through campus.

Even though much of A&M has stayed the same, some things have changed, particularly to the footprint of the A&M campus. It was beautiful, 70 and sunny, and we found ourselves strolling through campus, hand in hand, reminiscing. That is the beauty of marrying your college sweetheart. Our memories began at A&M and they have interwoven themselves into every aspect of our marriage. From Scott’s days as a yell leader (boy, he looked handsome in white) to my days as a Fish Camp Co-Chair and proud sorority girl (Go Chi-O!), there are so many stories held in the heart of College Station. One of my most favorite parts of the day was seeing moms and dads, holding their own children’s hands, saying things like, “Well, over there is…” or “Oh, I have a great story to tell you about this…”

Tradition is a beautiful thing.

After a pit stop at the Memorial Student Center (MSC) for bathrooms {hint: the non-busy ones are on the second floor}, we swung by the yell leader tailgate. After chatting for a bit and grabbing some snacks and water it was time. You see, Scott HATES missing anything on gameday. He wants to be there for it all. Old habits die hard. We made it to our seats and relished in the awesome weather before all the pre-game festivities.

I did crack up at the event staff checking bags as we walked into the game. She looked in my purse and said, “Um, ma’am, you can’t take in snacks.” I pointed to my stomach and said, “Even if you’re pregnant?” She gave me the thumbs up, smiled and said, “Enjoy the game.”

You got that right, sister.

We yelled, we said some choice words, we high-fived complete strangers, we kissed {Aggies “score” in the stands when we score on the field} and we loved every minute. Well, I may have not enjoyed the third quarter. What is it with me being pregnant during football season? I spent most of the entire third quarter under the stands cooling off, but no worries. When I leave my seat, the Aggies usually score. And score they did. Don’t worry, Scott got extra kisses when I got back. As the shirt says, “And on Earth as it is in Aggieland.”

After the game, we hooked up with Scott’s brother, Cory, and his wife, Jennifer. I really wish they lived closer. But, how blessed are we that we can meet up in College Station on gameday? Even more blessed that all four of us are Aggies, Classes of ’95, ’96 and ’01. We like to keep it in the family. It sure was awesome to see y’all, Jen and Cory. Kisses to our sweet nephews.

After a nice walk back to the car, another bathroom stop, a car drive, a Sonic sweet tea and a quick dinner, we made it back to Austin. The kids almost knocked us over with hugs and kisses and we thanked my parents profusely. They were rockstars in our absence, shuttling kids to soccer, doling out medicine and overseeing 4-H food show cooking. Mom and Dad, thank you for the gift of this weekend!

Day six just got better. Day seven brings a dose of reality.

Gig ’em, howdy and hullabaloo.

Looks like you had a great weekend! I’m a relatively new Texan, so I’m enjoying learning about all the Aggie traditions from you. We received a Barbie Collector catalog in the mail last week and I thought of y’all when I saw the Texas A&M Yell Leader Ken doll!

Oh, that yell leader doll. Don’t even get me started! It just doesn’t seem like he fits in all that crazy, but it is a bit humorous 🙂 Glad you’re enjoying Texas. It’s the best place to live!
