Last weekend Will kept telling me about his “edible cell project” for science class. Because we only had one million things going on, I must’ve filed it into the “I’ll add that to the later list.” On Sunday evening, he finally got serious and after I looked at his outline, I realized perhaps he should’ve started earlier. On a whim, I went to my go-to, St. Pinterest. Man, was there some inspiration.
Will looked it over and came up with a great idea. I picked up the necessary candies and got the cake mix and waited for school dismissal. Unbeknownst to me, the Boston Marathon bombing happened. While the world was watching horrific coverage, Will and I were in the kitchen having a blast. I didn’t even see the news until he went to bed. I am SO grateful for the time the two of us spent together, and even more so after seeing what happened during the marathon.
May I present, proof of one of the most fun afternoons I’ve had with Will in quite some time.
One boxed cake mix (made two 9″ cakes)
Store-bought white icing
Toothpicks and paper
Lots of candy
One cake was used as the base and then we cut a smaller hole from the other cake and placed it on top of the bottom layer, already iced. Will decided he wanted to tint the “nucleus” so I pulled out some pink food coloring and that did the trick. He did a great job choosing all the candy ingredients, labeling and placing everything.
