Several years ago, when Will took a liking to football, Scott and I made a decision. No tackle until middle school. Thankfully, we still have a year to go before I put my boys in pads and send them off to the astroturf. Maybe we’re overprotective, maybe not. I just know WAY too much about growth plates, broken bones and orthopedic specialists, I guess.
Both the boys have LOVED playing flag football these past few years. Last year, Scott had the opportunity to coach John Paul’s team and had a blast. We couldn’t make it work with his schedule this year, so we’ve been cheering from the sidelines.
Here’s what I know:
Will is not a fan of playing center. He says it’s boring. Scott reminded him that in two years when he plays tackle, a nice little noseguard will be on top of him. I don’t think it will be boring anymore.
Will loves to kick the ball.
Will loves to run routes and have Scott throw him passes in the backyard. Quite honestly, if that’s the only football he ever played, I think he’d be happy.
John Paul is fast. Like crazy fast. If he gets the ball, it’s as good as a touchdown.
John Paul loves watching SportsCenter, any pro or college game and is an avid fan of the Jets. The Jets! Don’t ask, I have no idea.
Neither one of my boys can remember their mouthguards. Their solution? They share. Ewwww. Boys – le sigh.
It’s been a great season. Will’s team finally put a game in the win column a couple of weeks ago. Those boys were so happy. It made ME happy to see them so giggly and smiley. John Paul’s team is undefeated. Although, I think all the boys are most concerned with “what’s for snack” at the end of the game. Don’t get me started on the color of his team jerseys (burnt orange). I’m surprised my camera hasn’t burst into flames yet.
Here’s our season, in pictures. Enjoy!
