Quotes of the week (QOTW) this week:
“Why is that grass old?”
Luke, upon spying the brown grass on the road. BWAHAHAHAHAHA.
The rest of the funnies Just. Didn’t. Happen. Gianna and I were both sick over the weekend and earlier in the week and we are finally coming out on the other side. Please, God, let this baby sleep.

My grand idea of getting a few posts in this week about prematurity got sidelined because of that ick Gianna and I had earlier this week. But, you can look for that goodness on Monday. And it is good. I enlisted a few preemie and NICU mommas who survived the NICU and have some great words of wisdom to share.

I can honestly say I never thought I’d do this. Give up Dr Pepper. It’s true. Two weeks ago, I set down my 23 flavors and I haven’t picked up one since. Who is this girl? During Lent, Scott gave up all beverages except water and when he made re-entry on Easter Sunday, the only thing he picked back up was red wine and the occasional sparkling water. He’s had zero Coke Zeros since March. He also started working out religiously and watching his portion control. I suppose all that goodness finally started to wear off on me. By necessity I’ve been drinking more water, because NURSING. But, I figured why not give up DP and see what happens. I’ve done this before with no real luck, but this time? We shall see.

Did someone say Iron Chef? The kids participated in the 4-H Food Challenge competition earlier this week and practiced their mad kitchen skills. This is a team competition and they are given a list of ingredients, all the supplies, a clue and then have 40 minutes to prepare a dish. They present the dish to a panel of judges and are quizzed on preparation, nutrition, cost and more. With each passing year, I’m more and more impressed with their confidence in the kitchen. I’m hopeful that when my kitchen only has jello, goldfish, stale bread, half an apple and a carrot stick that my kids can find something awesome to make. HA! In the junior category, John Paul’s team (The Incredible Cookers) came in first and Anna-Laura’s team (Cooking Clovers) came in second. Both of them advance to the district competition. Will’s team (Sous-per Chefs) just missed going to district and placed third. I’ll keep you posted on their December competition!

Do you know how I can be assured the end of the year is near? Because of all the doctor visits, labs, procedures and surgeries we’re cramming into the last six weeks of the year! Today, Luke knocked out four visits – new leg braces, lab work, ultrasound and nephrology – with three more to go before the end of the year. He was a total trooper. And, as I called Scott to relay our morning’s results I was struck by just how far Luke has come in five years. I can honestly say I never, ever, thought we’d be here because some days those visits were a dark reminder of all the hurdles still left. Today? Well, today, Luke gave his orthotist a hug and a fist bump. It brought tears to my eyes. So many of these specialists have seen Luke since he was itty bitty. And, yet, here he is.

Ever wonder what day-to-day life is like in a big family? Last week I hosted the annual Week in My Life series. Not only do I love documenting our life, but it is humbling to look back on our week and discover its life lessons. So many fine folks joined in the party and I loved catching a glimpse of how they capture memories, too.

Best read of the week? This gem about preparing to prepare for Advent. Y’all. I couldn’t agree more with what Deme shares:
I think a key for me really entering Advent is Thanksgiving. It’s so easy to rush past it, but thanksgiving preps the heart. When I rush through the process of gratitude (or skip it altogether), it’s so easy to run right into a commercialized Christmas…..void of peace, void of reflection, void of hope. Christmas is about our souls. Not our homes. Not the tree. Not the STUFF. Thanksgiving is our opportunity, to squash that need machine….to remember how much we already have and how much we are blessed.
