Winner winner chicken dinner. Really. The county 4-H Food Show and Spooky Desserts contest was last night and I was/am SO proud of all our 4-Hers who cooked, competed and interviewed so well. Will, John Paul and Anna-Laura all received “Best of Show” and will be competing at the District Food Show in San Marcos in December. Recipe links are below.

Those cookies were work! As part of that spooky desserts contest, Anna-Laura and I were looking over one of my cookie cookbooks and decided to get adventurous. Or, maybe I decided to be adventurous and she was swayed by the sugar. No matter. We tackled these bad boys. I’m so proud of the hard work she put into them, and I have an even greater appreciation for the folks who do this for a living. Bridget? Olga? Don’t y’all worry. You still have my business! A h/t to Bridget from Bake at 350 for those spooky recipe ideas.

Was it really sixteen years ago? Yep, yep it was. Sixteen years ago I was a graduate student at Iowa State University and somehow landed the gig of VEISHEA General Co-Chair with an awesome fella named Ben (sadly, the tradition is no longer around, what a tremendous loss for the University). It’s been fourteen years since I’ve seen Ben and I’d never met his wife. But, as providence would have it, they were in Austin this weekend and we were able to grab a bite to eat, share some libations and laugh-our-heads-off during a great dinner. Ben and Jeni, can’t tell you how fabulous it was to hug your necks!

Best read all week? This one about kids and sports. Really, if you have a kid of sports-playing age, click this link. As parents, we owe our kids better than what we’re giving them.
Jen, thanks for hosting!
