This week’s quotes of the week (QOTW):
“You’re a good helper, Mommy.”
Luke, good to know someone notices.
“My big thumb toe hurts.”
Luke, who knew that was the actual name?
“These socks are soooo comfy.”
Anna-Laura ,commenting on how much she loves the new cotton.
“My hands are getting tired of playing.”
Clare, in response to her 20-minute stint of computer screen time. I almost fell out of my chair laughing.
“THAT. That, was your hair in high school?”
Will, commenting on my nearly buzz cut ‘do. Yes, son, I was the epitome of fashion in 1990.
“Is it ever going to stop hurting?”
Me, on my poor, aching back. I have NO idea what I did. But, y’all. I’ve tried massage, ibuprofen, heat/ice, walking, hot baths and stretching. Nada. I finally placed an SOS with my spine surgeon. Yeah, it’s that bad. Who is the patron saint of backs?!?

One day into summer and we already clocked our first ER visit. For the record, it wasn’t me. Seems as if the Mr. thought it would be a good idea to cut frozen bread. With a Cutco knife. Yeah, that’s an ER visit waiting to happen. Oh, wait. Three stitches later and he’s back to 90%. The boys were on lawn mowing duty last weekend and I don’t think he was too sad about delegating that duty.

Oh happiest of days, my birthday is next Tuesday! You KNOW how much I love some birthday love, so next week will be glorious. I’ll be volunteering with VBS as a station leader and that’s pretty much the best present I could ever receive. It is my all time favorite week of the year. And to combine it with my favorite day of the year? Yes, I’ll be in heaven. In case you’re wondering, my party theme is Dr Pepper. It will be way tamer than the kids, but I do have some DP ice cream on tap. 23 flavors, how I love thee.

This week, I wrote a post for Austin Catholic New Media about enjoying (not dreading) summer with your kids. I’ll admit there are some days in the summer when I just want 15 minutes to myself. But, that far outweighs the beauty of having all my chicks in the nest for a few months. If you’re wondering how we roll in the summertime with five kids, click on that link and wonder no more.

For about a year, I’ve been DIYing my laundry detergent, but who knew there was a movement (aka Pinterest) to make all your household cleaners? I’m the last to the party, par usual. Whatever tips, tricks, links and recipes you have, post ’em. I made a trip to HEB and The Container Store this week and I am all stocked up with vinegar, castile soap and essential oils. It’s a crazy fun party here.

Some friends really are forever. Our good friends, who now live in Australia, were stateside and we were lucky enough to host them and the kids for dinner. Peter and I have known each other since high school. He married a gem in Colleen and they have the cutest three kids. It was lovely to have them here, if only for a few hours. We also stopped by the convent to love on Sr. Jude Andrew before she heads to her new assignment (she’s loving on my girls below). We’ve been blessed to have her for two years. It just never gets any easier saying goodbye to another Sister. Ann Arbor Dominicans, you’re so loved!

I’ve talked about this forever. Four years, almost. But this summer, in between Headbandz games and crafts, I’m finally making good on my promise to write that book. I don’t know if Random House (ha!) will ever publish it or if anyone will ever read it, but I’m writing it anyway. Because writing is my happy place. It’s how I process all this crazy that percolates in my brain. It may be months before I mention it again, but send a prayer my way and stay tuned. Who knows what God has in store.
Thanks, Jen, for being a gracious hostess for this week’s 7 Quick Takes. I’m ready for that margarita anytime you are!
