I’m cheating a bit because I haven’t been to Mass just yet. We had to divide and conquer this weekend because of the Mass server schedule. I’m sharing what I wore to last weekend’s Vigil Mass where my parents joined the church and Easter Mass the following day.
First up, the Vigil Mass. Because this is typically a super long Mass (3+ hours), we opted to hire a sitter for the younger three and take the older two boys with us. As it turned out that was the smartest thing we did the entire Triduum. We did make it to Holy Thursday and Good Friday Masses, taking the older three and switching off parents. That worked beautifully, as well. The kids did remarkable and it ended up being a very spiritual and reflective Mass for all of us.
Some of you know I’m a convert to Catholicism from a whole slew of churches. While my parents have always been supportive of my conversion to Catholicism, they never indicated an interest in joining the church. Their conversion story is not mine to tell, but I can share with you that the Vigil Mass may go down as one of the most meaningful I’ve attended for so many reasons. Seeing my parents confirmed was quite a bit more moving than I thought it would be. I probably could’ve done a better job focusing the camera, but I learned that’s a pretty hard thing to do when you’re crying your eyes out.
The reception after allowed us to give my mom and dad proper hugs and kisses, a specially made rosary and great fellowship with their sponsors and long-time friends, the Peters family. The best quote of the night came from John Paul, “So, does this mean that Papa and Nana will be praying more Hail Mary’s and Our Father’s?” It’s a possibility, buddy. For my parents, and all those who joined the church this Easter, offer up their faith journey to prayer. My most sincere wish for my parents is that they are surrounded by a strong faith community in their new parish and they learn to love the church, and our God, even more. Welcome home, Mom and Dad.
