A tragedy is hard on everyone. It hits you by surprise. Shakes your faith. Wears you out.
The little town of West, Texas, resides in the northern part of our diocese. To say that hits a little close to home is an understatement.
As the events continue to unfold there and the funeral Masses keep coming, I keep wondering about the well-being of our priests and deacon assigned there. After the Sandy Hook tragedy, I remember reading how the priests were bearing an incredibly heavy load as they provided spiritual counsel to a town that was broken. The burden is great as they celebrate Mass after Mass (9 of the 15 that died were Catholic) and work to band together as a town and faith community. I can’t begin to know how difficult that will be.
I’m asking you to join me in sending these good and holy men a card or letter of encouragement. Over the course of weeks and months, they’re going to need your prayers. More than we may ever know. Invite your friends and neighbors, your school, your religious education class and anyone else you can think of to send a card to the Church of the Assumption in West. I know that if those were my sons, I’d want the world praying for them.
