If you’ve been reading the blog for a while, you know I have my own graphic design business. Loads of fun. This week, I was asked by one of my clients to present at their annual conference, held here in Austin. My college-aged babysitter was home for the holiday break, so I said ‘yes’, put on grownup clothes and headed down to the Driskill Hotel.
I really felt like I was having an out-of-body experience. I mean, it was a WEDNESDAY and I was dressed up like it was Sunday Mass. I had a roomful (50+) people all interested in what I was saying. Usually, my kids don’t even care what I say. These people were listening and asking me questions, as if I actually knew what I was talking about. I’m telling you, very weird. But also incredibly affirming. I needed a professional morning, to reconnect with the professional world, to talk to people that can wipe their own hineys and cut up their own food. To feel like I was really living out God’s plan for my life. It was really lovely. I was certainly happy to send the attendees off to the next presentation and head home to love on my little people. I have to say, though, Wednesday struck just the right balance at just the right time.
Quite honestly, I wish every mom could have the same sweet gig I have. I work when my kids don’t really miss me – they’re typically napping or sleeping – and I still get to be there for all the stuff of life. I still get to change diapers, cut up food, pick up toys, go to playdates, hang at the park and grocery shop with a basketball team. Most days, it’s the best of both worlds.
It also reminded me to be grateful. Which reminds me of something I forgot to tell you. I keep hearing people talk about their word of the year. You know, a word that captures what they want to accomplish in 2012.
Mine is POSITIVITY. What’s yours?
