If you haven’t heard much from me the past few weeks, or I haven’t been as funny, blame it on Luke
We started table food a few weeks ago and he’s had a bit of a rough go. I noticed about a week after we really got serious, that he looked thinner. Then, he got croup and a stomach virus last week – along with a nasty bout of teething – and I definitely knew he lost weight.
Fortunately, we had a visit with the GI doctor (gastro-intestinal) on the books for months and it just so happened to be last Thursday. My worst fear, okay not my worst, but still not fun, was confirmed. Luke had lost a pound and a half. He was an itty bitty 14lbs. 6oz. according to their scale. It typically measures a little heavier than the one at our pediatrician’s, so I’m guessing he was really about 14.2. So basically, since July he’s stayed the EXACT same weight. Ouch.
Enter Dr. Berhane to the rescue. We now have him on a nutrition shake which accounts for about 90% of his daily diet in calories and we go in for weekly weight checks. In the last seven days, he’s gained back that weight he lost and is at 15lbs. 13oz! I almost fell over at the scale check this morning.
Arg. This weight thing is so dang hard. It just seems like every other baby in the free world gains weight no problem. They have super chunky thighs and double chins. I know, all my other babies were like that. And, not every baby has crazy intestines like our little Luke. But still. It’s just hard on a momma. It’s hard obsessing over every single thing he eats – or doesn’t. I’m trying to keep it all in perspective. Some days are better than others, I guess.
We’ll keep after the added calorie shakes (which of course, are NOT covered by insurance) and see where that leads us. I’m hoping he really takes to table food and we can check this off the list of ‘things to worry about’ in the very near future.

Here at Team Whitaker, I just blog about life as it happens. Sometimes I'm extraordinarily funny (according to my children), sometimes not. I just try to be real. Real Kathryn. Unedited. Motherhood and our faith lives are a journey, why not join me?

You bravely face each challenge as it comes! God bless you and your family this Thanksgiving. (Hope Luke loves turkey, etc.)
